Conversion of the Modified Kovács Model Parameters to the Brooks & Corey and Van Genuchten Model Parameters for Granular Soils

The modified Kovács (MK) model can be considered as one of the most versatile predictive models available to estimate the unsaturated hydraulic functions. The MK model relies on basic geotechnical properties to obtain the water retention curve (WRC), which can then be used to define the relative permeability function. In addition, the model can also take into consideration hysteresis effects and volume changes. However, the MK model has not yet been introduced in many codes, as most numerical applications needing a mathematical equation to represent the WRC of soils use the Brooks & Corey (BC) (1964) and/or the van Genuchten (vG) (1980) models. To allow for a wider application of the MK model, the authors propose in this paper a direct conversion of MK model parameters to the BC and vG parameters for granular soils taken from the Grizzly soil data base (Haverkamp et al. 1998). The proposed equations were developed using data from 15 granular soils. Results show that BC and vG parameters can be deduced adequately from MK model parameters. RÉSUMÉ Le modèle modifié de Kovács (MK) peut être considéré comme l’un des modèles prédictifs les plus versatiles afin d’estimer les fonctions hydriques. Le modèle MK utilise les propriétés géotechniques de base pour définir les courbes de rétention d’eau (CRE), qui peuvent ensuite servir à obtenir la fonction de perméabilité relative. Le modèle MK peut également prendre en considération les effets d'hystérésis ainsi que les changements de volume. Cependant, le modèle n’a pas encore été introduit dans plusieurs codes numériques, car la plupart des logiciels qui recourent à une équation mathématique pour représenter la CRE des sols utilisent les modèles de Brooks-Corey (BC) (1964) et/ou de van Genuchten (vG) (1980). Pour permettre une application plus large du modèle MK, les auteurs proposent dans cet article une conversion directe des paramètres du modèle MK vers les paramètres des modèles BC et vG pour les sols granulaires. Les équations proposées ont été développées en utilisant les données de 15 sols granulaires prises dans la base de données Grizzly (Haverkamp et al. 1998). Les résultats montrent que les paramètres des modèles BC et vG peuvent être déduits adéquatement à partir des paramètres du modèle MK.
